In the play, The Merchant of Venice, Shakespeare makes good use of two main characters to spark life into yet another one of his captivating plays. These two men are Shylock, a Jew, and Antonio, a Christian. Antonio comes into the play as a pessimistic, miserable character.

Shylock, on the other hand, is almost immediately seen as the antagonist, greedy and spiteful. As main characters in the play, enough coverage is given to Antonio and Shylock to distinguish clear differences and similarities between the two. Both characters are willing to die for something. Antonio never benefited from his help to Bassanio, but Antonio risked his life for his closest friend nonetheless. How many people in the world could do that nowadays? He would let others take his life in order to save his money from being given away. Though Antonio and Shylock share certain similarities, including their jobs as money lenders, they also had their differences. As a Christian, Antonio believed that money should be lent out without interest. This is further seen through his repeated loaning of money to his friend Bassanio even though, time and time again, Bassanio failed to repay him, Antonio never asked anything extra from Bassanio as compensation.
On the other hand, greedy Shylock demanded interest from people whom he loaned money to. He believed that this was simply a business practice intended to make him thrive. Not only did they have divergent business practices, but they also led very different lives. Life could not be any more different for the two. The same cannot be said of Shylock. With only a handful of friends, Shylock was hated by many and even betrayed by those closest to him, merchant of venice literature essay.
From the beginning of the play, Antonio was surrounded by men who cared for him, asking him if he was alright. This exemplified the amicable relationship between Antonio and his friends, merchant of venice literature essay. Even his own daughter, Jessica — one of the closest to him, deserted him for a Christian, despite her knowledge that her dad hated Christians. The complete contrast in the popularity of the two characters helped to fuel the acrimony and bitterness Shylock harbored towards Antonio.
Antonio and Shylock were enemies that had commonalities as well as differences. Both were quick to offer their lives in return for saving another being or object. Because of their different religious backgrounds, their practices of money-lending were vastly dissimilar. The interplay of these similarities and differences contributed to the creation of an intense atmosphere of animosity between the two in the play.
